The story so far:
My character, Absolom Gruntfuttock, has set out with another resident of Quillanoi Forest West,, Deliah, on a quest 
for limestone.  To help carry the stuff back he has recruited Marilee, a young woman, and Dersu, a simple soul.

(Number at the start of each item is the time - day followed by hour. )

They have arrived at their first stop, after 4 days walking, the village of Quillanoi Forest North where they decide 
to do some cooking...


      1267-2: You say: "Dersu, It's easy enough to drive a smoker. just keep it 
      topped up with wood, and don't put your head inside it."

      1267-2: Dersu says: "Dersu bad cook - Have no meat to put in smoker."

      1267-2: You say: "Don't worry Dersu. We are nearly finished anyway. You 
      can go and chase tortoises or butterflies instead, but don't tire yourself 
      out, we have a long journey ahead."

      1267-2: Dersu says: "Butterflies? Dersu collect coal to draw cave picture. 
      Absolom and Marilee and everyone leave, then long time after, other people 
      come. See picture and feel good, almost as good as song!"

      1267-2: You say: "What a good idea! Dersu, you are a very clever man, and 
      I respect you."

      1267-2: Marilee says: "No room on the smoker for me, so I'll help Dersu 
      collect coal .....*smiles* Dersu, that's a brilliant idea - leaving the 
      pictures behind. I like that. As for the smoker, I'll show you how to use 
      one sometime. *smiles*"

      1267-2: Dersu says: "Marilee and Absolom very kind people."

      1267-2: Dersu says: "Absolom has hawk spirit: Absolom-hawk fly high in 
      sky, look down on people and say "Kai!!!". Sometimes even kill rabbit, but 
      also friend for hunter, if in good mood."

      1267-2: Dersu says: "Marilee has pidgeon spirit, beautiful white bird, 
      like people and look at them with laughing eye, first from left side, then 
      from right. Marilee-pidgeon say "curl-curl" and like to sit with kind 
      people, even if they old or lonely."

      1267-3: You say: "You're a good man, Dersu. Don't take offence at anything 
      I say. And you're right about many things... Marilee is a dove, no doubt. 
      I haven't your gift of description, butt you are far more than a 
tortoise."

      1267-3: You say: "As much as I'd like to get dirty with you, Marilee, I 
      can only spend an hour or two in this coal pit. Deliah can finish the 
      smoking. "

      1267-3: Marilee says: "*Smiles at Absolom, blushing slightly at his 
      words....* It's pleasing to work along beside you Absolom. "

      1267-3: Marilee says: "*turns to Dersu* Your words are very sweet, very 
      kind .... I'm honoured by them. Thank you...*smiles* "

      1267-3: Marilee says: "*she stops for a moment then continues* You are, as 
      Absolom states, far more than a tortoise. You are a combination of 
      spirits, I think ... an owl who sees more than most people, who is wise 
      and all knowing. A tortoise spirit gives you the ability to slow down and 
      enjoy life, something I'm learning from you .... *smiles*"

      1267-4: You say: "Well Dersu, we're certainly making Marilee smile, and 
      that brightens up the day for everyone."


      1267-4: Marilee says: "*she lowers her eyes ... suddenly a bit shy over 
      the attention, but smiles even bigger* I'm very lucky to have such 
      wonderful friends.... *smiles at Absolom, Dersu and Deliah* "

      1267-4: You say: "OK now to be more serious. I'm leaving in exactly an 
      hour, the coal digging should be finished with luck, otherwise you can 
      catch me up. Xena can give the smoked meat to whoever is still here when 
      she awakes. We'll be heading for Brunoi Hills South."


      1267-4: Marilee says: "*smiles* I was being serious.... *she smile turns 
      to laughter* ... but I'll be ready in an hour. "


      1267-4: Marilee says: "*giggling now ... * HER smile turns to laughter 
      ....* Oh my, Absolom, you have me a little flustered. "

      1267-4: You say: "Marilee, you do just the same to me. I just hope I can 
      concentrate enough to take the right road."

      1267-4: Marilee says: "*laughs* Well, I'll be following you ... so we'll 
      be lost together which wouldn't be entirely a bad place to be. "

      1267-4: Xena gives you 800 grams of smoked meat.

      1267-4: Xena says: "There's some more meat Absolom... You and your friends 
      have a pleasant trip... and be sure to come back anytime for more 
      smokin... "

      1267-4: Xena says: "I am out of meat everyone... so the smokers are now 
      idle... if anyone want to contribute their raw meat, we can get things 
      going once again..."

      1267-4: Marilee says: "There you are, ma'am. *smiles* A contribution and 
      partial repayment for your kindness to us. "

      1267-4: You see Marilee drop some meat.

      1267-4: You see Deliah from Little House in the Woods. give some meat to 
      Xena.

      1267-4: You see Xena take some meat.

      1267-4: Xena says: "Thank you Deliah..."

      1267-4: Xena says: "And thank you as well Marilee... "
 
      1267-4: Marilee says: "You're very welcome. *smiles* Thank you for 
      everything, too! "

      1267-4: You see Xena use some meat on Smoking meat.

      1267-4: You see Xena use some wood on Smoking meat.

      1267-5: You say: "And there's a little more. Thanks for your hospitality."

      1267-5: You give 210 grams of meat to Xena.

      1267-5: Project Digging for coal has been finished (263 grams, ending up 
      in the inventory of Dersu).

      1267-5: You give 409 grams of salted meat to Marilee.

      1267-5: You say: "There's a treat for you Marilee, all the way from Hills 
      of Hilloi West. Deliah, I don't know how much food you have, but I think 
      I've plenty spare now. Right folks, let's go. *tears his eyes away from 
      Marilee to try to focus on the right road.*"

      1267-5: You point at Brunoi Lake Road to Brunoi Hills (south).

      1267-5: You leave Quillanoi Forest (north), taking Brunoi Lake Road to 
      Brunoi Hills (south).

      1267-5: Marilee says: "*sneaks up behind him and slips her arms around 
      him* Hello Absolom. "

      1268-1: Deliah from Little House in the Woods. says: "Ok i'm finally 
      awake, i knew i'd be behind"

      1268-1: Marilee says: "Hi Deliah..*smiles* Did you have a good rest. "

      1268-1: You say: "Oh good, we're all here. I've matched my speed with 
      Marilee and am now going full speed. "

      1268-1: You say: "I liked their food supply system in QFN. I guess that 
      was Xena's doing. She wasn't there when I passed through before."

      1268-1: Deliah from Little House in the Woods. says: "It was alright, 
      Marilee, i just couldn't wake up as soon as i had wanted."

      1268-1: Deliah from Little House in the Woods. says: "I bet you guys are 
      probably carrying less than me too"

      1268-1: You say: "I'm carrying 8401g."

      Marilee and Dersu have at least 35 days supply. I have far more, so if you 
      are less well supplied than that I'll top you up at the next stop... which 
      seems quite a distance."

      pinches his cheek* Why aren't you hunting? You love to shoot animals from 
      the bike."

      1268-2: Anatole says: "Help me repair some things, Kabong. Unless you need 
      to repair your shield and bow."

      1268-2: Marilee says: "I'm carrying 8318g and I've matched my speed with 
      yours. *smiles*"

      1268-3: You say: "Ooh, that smile again! Makes me go all fluttery. *offers 
      his own lop-sided grin.* We are equally loaded then. I think Dersu will 
      find himself out in front unless he's slowed down a bit."

      1268-3: You say: "Good day couple on the tandem. Nice day for cycling. "

      1268-3: Marilee says: "Goodness me.... I seem to be smiling all the time 
      these days and rightly so. I'm quite happy. Dersu is a speedy 
      tortoise...*smiles*"

      1268-4: Kabong says: "*He waves* Anatole Kabong go go go! Ha HA!"

      1268-5: You see Kabong efficiently hurt a racoon using a composite recurve 
      bow.

      1268-5: You see Kabong efficiently hurt a hawk using a composite recurve 
      bow.

      1268-5: Kabong says: "*spits and looks at his bow, annoyed.*"

      1268-5: You say: "He must have a tremendous sense of balance to shoot a 
      bow while riding a bike!"

      1268-5: You say: "*whistles something that can just be recognised as an 
      old Blamen buffalo skinner's lament* They say a good whistler is a good 
      kisser. Do you think that's right Marilee?"

      1268-5: Marilee says: "*grins at him ....* Well, I can't say that I know 
      that to be a fact, but .... if you need someone to practice on ... *raises 
      her hand, waving* ... I'll volunteer.... *making a small pucker with her 
      lips* "

      1268-5: You say: "*wraps his arms round her and presses his lips to 
      hers.* Mmmm."

      1268-5: Marilee says: "Oh .... *her eyes widen briefly, then ..... "

      1268-5: Marilee says to you: "...then close as she accepts his kiss.... 
      sliding her arms around his waist, hugging him close* "

      1268-6: You say: "*reluctantly loosening his grip*... I hope that was 
      better than my whistling."

      1268-6: Kabong says: "*grins and gives Anatole a sloppy kiss*"

      1268-6: You say: "Is this road called Lovers' Lane? Romance certainly 
      seems to be in the air... or is it mosquitoes?"

      1268-6: Kabong says: "*grins and claps* Anatole Kabong friends! Anatole 
      Kabong go go go! Ha HA!"

      1268-6: Dersu says: "Dersu don't like mosquitos, they are spirit of evil 
      man who big and mighty in life. When die, become little mosquito, but 
      still do nothing but drink people's blood."

      1268-6: Marilee says: "*smiles at him sweetly* I may need to compare your 
      kisses to your whistling many more times before I can be sure. "

            1268-6: Marilee says: "*smiles at Dersu.... * You are a wise one, Dersu. "

      1269-2: You say: "I think I'd better stop whistling, pleasant though the 
      after-effects are, or we'll slow ourselves down too much. *squeezes 
      Marilee's hand.*"


      1269-4: Marilee says: "*smiles* It's a pleasure to here you whistle 
      Absolom ... perhaps whistling is a sign of happiness. If so, I hope I am 
      making a contribution. *she entwines her fingers with his...returning the 
      squeeze*"

      1269-4: You say: "I'm certainly happy, Marilee. I'd done one long journey 
      and didn't really want to start on another so soon, but now I feel I could 
      walk for ever with you... or at least till my feet were worn down to the 
      knees."

      1269-5: Marilee [attempting to hand Absolom a note, but being prevented by the game mechanics] says: "oooh, I 
can't hand it to you while we are walking 
      ... so, I'll read it aloud and give it to you when we arrive in the hills. 
      "

      1269-5: Marilee says: "For Absolom - My lover bathes me in his precious 
      light. I am the Earth to his all-giving sun. His needs are burned away in 
      serving mine, Consumed in the production of his love. In my awe I'm 
      sometimes forced to wonder: How can such sweet radiance be sustained? So 
      selfless is the self in need of need, So much in love with giving others 
      love. Still, the sun requires no return. Light and life come humbly from 
      its fire. And so I worship him as did the ancients, Grateful for the gift 
      of being near."

      1269-5: You say: "OH Marilee, that's lovely, I've gone all gooey and 
      goosepimply now. I knew your poetry would be better than "There was a 
      young fellow from Hilloi...""

      1269-5: Marilee says: "*smiles with a blush* I'm glad you like it. I was 
      thinking of you .... and of the conversations we've had as we've been 
      walking of Dersu's connection with nature and the animals and of Deliah 
      and her Chris ... *reaches for his hand, bringing it to her lips ...* and 
      I am grateful for the gift of just being near."

      1269-6: You say: "*smiling broadly* You are sweet, Marilee. Here is the

      QFW at just the right moment."

      been in QFW for a long time, having built your house there, but have you 
      always lived there?"

      1271-4: Marilee says: "*smiles* Actually I spawned in QFW. The day you saw 
      me was my spawn day. "

      1271-4: Marilee says: "*giggling at Kabong, snoring* I think we are boring 
      Kabong."

      1271-5: You say: "Well, he'll fall off the bike if he's not careful. It 
      certainly was fortunate that I had managed to come back from my travels 
      when I did, then, or someone else might have run off with you, Marilee. 
      *broad smile*"

      1271-5: Marilee says: "*smiles* You certainly did sneak up on me and steal 
      my heart ... and I'm very happy that you did. *leans over and kisses him 
      on the cheek...* My sweetie. "

      1271-5: You say: "*puts an arm around her* Dersu might say that's what 
      fate is all about. If I hadn't managed to pick up abandoned salt... if I'd 
      stayed at HoH south to grill some meat, which I would have done but the 
      firepits were in use... if I'd stopped off a little longer at HoH East... 
      and so on... none of this would have happened."

      1271-5: Marilee says: "But then again, I'm not quite certain anyone but 
      you could have stolen my heart... *smiles and slips her arm around his 
      waist*"

      1271-6: You say: "But there were lots of handsome men in QFW, like... 
      er... Jannie.... and luckily he was hidden away cooking with Minnie. "


      1271-7: Marilee says: "You are the most handsome of men, Absolom..... 
      *smiles, suddenly a little shy.....* My man. "

      1272-2: You say: "*looking bashful* Oh you are sweet, and lovely. *then 
      managing to take his eyes off her for a few seconds* But you seem to have 
      scared all the animals away. Haven't seen any for some time."

      1272-2: You say: "Always thinking of my stomach, when I'm not thinking of 
      you. I think they grow wheat in the hills, if we need it, but we should be 
      OK for food."

      1272-2: You say: "It's time I tried another poem, but it's not quite right, 
     I think:
I've travelled to east and to west,

      1272-2: Marilee says: "*giggles* Oh, Absolom,you are so sweet......and you 
      make me so happy. * looking down at her toes......and giggling harder*"

      1272-6: You say: "Move over a bit closer to me, Marilee, there's another 
      tandem approaching. This is a busy road."

      1272-6: You say: "Good day sir, on the Quillanoi tandem. I'm Absolom from 
      Quillanoi Forest Westhaving a gentle multi-day stroll with a couple of 
      lovely ladies."

      1272-6: Kabong says: "*waves at Eagle* Kabong! "

      1272-6: Marilee says to you: "*slipping her arm through his...and 
      snuggling closer*"

      1273-1: You say: ""

      1273-1: You say: "Mmm, you made me speechless again. Let's hope for more 
      traffic."

      1273-2: Marilee says: "*her eyes sparkle as she smiles at him.*"

      1273-2: You say: "There is an old Cantrian saying, (that I just made up,) 
      that goes:
If in bramble bush you stray,
Though scratched, you'll live another day,
But find another, look behind,
And maybe treasure you will find.
      So Marilee, if you see a suitable bush, we could go behind it and 
      test this theory."

      1273-2: Marilee says to you: "*giggles* Your timing is perfect....*grabs 
      his hand and pulls him behind the bramble bush just to the left side of 
      the road* "

      1273-3: You say: "*There is much grunting, panting and squeals from behind 
      the bush. They emerge rather breathless, Absolom adjusting his loincloth, 
      Marilee rather tousled.* I'm not sure that's the sort of treasure the 
      rhyme referred to, Marilee, but I doubt there is a better one. *he kisses 
      her on the cheek, and they continue hand in hand.*"

      1273-3: Marilee says: "*giggles and looks straight ahead.....her hand in 
      his hand*"

      1273-3: Kabong says: "*raises his eyebrow curiously at the couple*"

      1273-4: You say: "*winks at Marilee* Digging for truffles, Kabong. 
      Delicious. *puts an arm round Marileee.*"

      1273-4: Kabong says: "Kabong! Ha HA! *he claps*"

      1273-4: Marilee says: "*looks at Absolom* .... I've discovered I have a 
      deep and unsatiable desire for truffles.... *grinning* "

      1273-6: You say: "*shakes his head* Don't know if it was the... er... 
      truffles, but the world seems to be acting rather strangely. Hope that's 
      not the effect every time... but further experiments are called for, 
      certainly... purely for research purposes, of course."

      1273-6: Deliah from Little House in the Woods. says: "My life story.... 
      well basically i spawned in Tircqi, got some food and i traveled. I 
      observed the towns and decided i wanted something quieter. I came to the 
      forest and met some nice people there and decided i'd stay there. So i 
      worked with Awi, Eddie and a few others and helped get the fire pits made. 
      I built the woodland center. Chris came along and we wound up a couple and 
      made a house together. We took trips to brunoi to obtain and trade for 
      items. We got ourselves some clothes there and a marriage proposal. A lady 
      there wanted to help us do the wedding too. We came back to the forest to 
      try and get ready for a big resources trips but then he got sleeping 
      sickness a lot and so we just kind of stayed there working ever since. No 
      marriage, no trip together. I want to have him placed in the temple when 
      Awi says it's ok. Then i guess i met you guys just shortly after his 
      death. I suppose it helps to get away though, to not be reminded of his 
      absence."

and it was like being kicked by a buffalo... and then my eyes and nose started leaking... and my smile turned upside

were hanging below my chin. *Throws his arms around her in a wild embrace and showers her face with kisses*"

but Marilee and I seem to have caught
some kind of disease. We have to get close to each other and then our faces keep looking at each other ... then our

The sympto ms are very pleasant though. You feel all warm and fuzzy and fluttery inside... and I don't think I ever 
want to be cured. I think Kabong and
Anatole have caught it as well, but not as badly as Marilee and me... nobody could have it that bad."

The limestone collection having been carried out successfully, they start the return home during which the following 
monologue takes place.  (You'll find the verse adaptation of it elsewhere on the site.}



1301-2: You say: "Dersu once said that Galthran, (was that his name?) liked treasure too much. That reminded me of a 
story. It's very long so I'll tell
it a bit at a time... no Marilee, that's not because I'm making it up as I go along I know it's true because that 
old woman I met near Hilloi heard it
from a traveller who'd been told it by a woman who was once married to the second mate of one of the ships involved. 
So here's the first part..."

1301-2: You say: "Once upon a time there lived a king... well, he wasn't really a king, more a village leader, like
Brandon in Brunoi Hills West, except this man was even greedier and a lot more stupid. The village was quite like 
BHW too: they had limestone and wheat,
but they also had wood. There were no roads leading to this place, but there was a river which led to the sea. So 
this king had three ships built, and
he filled them with limestone, and told the captains to bring back the most valuable treasure they could find. So 
the three ships set off, and the king
impatiently waited for them to come back... but he had to wait a long time... and so will you, at least until 
tomorrow..."

* *

1302-1: You say: "OK So this king is sitting waiting for news of his ships... And eventually the first one arrives.
The captain grabs some samples of his treasures and rushes off to the palace. "Sire, I have brought three treasures 
with me... here is a sample of the first."
He hands the king a roll of silk.
The king is amazed at the material, and thinks there can be nothing better than the feel of the silk, (but then, 
he's never touched Marilee's hair."

1302-1: You say: "Then the captain hands over a polished tortoise-shell shield. The king taps it and says, "There 
can be nothing tougher in the world, (but
he hadn't seen a shield like Deliah's,) then he looks at it and says "And those must be the most wonderful colours 
ever." (But he had never looked into
Marilee's eyes.)"
"Then the captain handed over an onion. The king sniffed it, wrinkled his nose and looked puzzled.
The captain said: "It is an amazing healing food, sire. Eat it and it will cure your injuries." The king had cut 
himself shaving with his old bone knife,
so he thought he'd try it. He took a bite, his eyes started watering, and he was about to spit it out... but then he 
noticed his cuts had stopped smarting
and he thought this must be the most marvellous medicine in the world... But of course, he hadn't tried Dersu's 
magic mushrooms."

1302-2: You say: "The king praised the captain, and gave him a big house, and the fourth prettiest girl in the 
kingdom as his servant. Then he settled down
to wait for the other ships... and he waited, and waited... and as you should know by now, you must wait too, to 
find out what happened next."

* *

1303-1: You say: "Episode 3 of this interminable story. Think yourself lucky, young man coming the other way, that 
you'll only have to listen to this bit,
and show a bit of compassion for these people who can't get away."

1303-1: You say: "So the king is sitting in his silk robe, protected by his tortoise shield, eating onions, waiting 
for his second ship to arrive... and
arrive it does. The captain grabs samples of the treasure he has brought, and hurries to the king's palace. "Sire, 
see this lovely yellow metal!" he cries,
and the king thinks it is the shiniest thing in the world, (but he hasn't seen the sun glinting on Marilee's hair,) 
and he is very pleased."

1303-1: You say: "Then the ship captain produces his second treasure, diamonds, and the king thinks they are the 
sparkliest thing in the world and is even
more pleased, (but that's because he's never seen the sparkle in Marilee's eyes when she laughs.) The captain then 
reveals a lovely fur coat, and gives
this to the king, who thinks this must be the warmest thing in the world, (but he's never been wrapped in Marilee's 
loving arms,) and is so pleased that
he gives the captain an even bigger house than he gave to the first captain, and gives him the second and third most 
beautiful girls in the kingdom to
look after him."

1303-1: You say: "Then he sits and waits for the third ship to arrive... and as you should know by now, you'll have 
to wait, too, until tomorrow. But then
I'll tell you about the mostest beautiful girl in the kingdom... and might even finish the story... but I doubt 
that."

* *

[During this interval Marilee has performed some acrobatics to the delight of her companions.]

1304-2: You say: "Um... now where was I before I was so pleasantly interrupted... Yes. The king is waiting for the 
third ship to arrive, and he waits...
and he waits... and he waits..."

1304-2: You say: "By this time he's sitting in a diamond encrusted golden throne, with a gold crown, diamond rings 
and bracelets, wearing his silk robe
and his fur coat, with his tortoise shield at his side, and he's feeling very uncomfortable, because the throne 
doesn't fit him nearly as well as his old
wooden chair, he is far too hot with all these clothes on, and he keeps cutting himself on the diamonds. He has to 
keep eating onions to heal the cuts,
and he's just about sick of the taste of them by now."

1304-2: You say: "But those are the burdens suffered by those in power... Meanwhile, up the river comes the third 
ship, battered and loaded down to the
gunwales, (whatever they are,) with cargo. She docks and the captain hurries ashore with two sacks of his goods... 
but before going to the palace he stops
off at a small cottage near the docks, and drops one of the sacks there, at the feet of the most beautiful girl in 
the town."

1304-2: You say: "I'd better take a minute or two to describe her. She was so beautiful that she was nearly as 
lovely as Marilee is when she's covered in
dust and looks a mess from doing somersaults in the road, and is making faces because I've annoyed her."

1304-2: You say: "So the ship's captain takes his other sack to the palace, to the king... a very angry king, who 
yells "Where have you been all this time.
You'd better have something pretty special there." The captain explains that the ship's compass got damaged and he 
got lost. After sailing for a year their
food ran out and they were nearly starving, but the lookout spotted an island, just in time. They went ashore and 
found the island covered with this marvellous
food... which must be the greatest treasure of all. He opened the sack and strewed asparagus at the king's feet."
1304-2: You say: "The king looked at him in amazement, then yelled: "You absolute fool. This green stuff is no use 
to me. We have wheat fields. What do
we want with this? You've wasted my time, my limestone, and the time of the crew!" He ordered the man thrown into 
jail... and that's where he stayed, waiting
for something to happen... as must you, until tomorrow, when we might meet again the most beautiful girl in the 
town, or not..."

1305-2: You say: "Oh... um... yes, where was I? Oh yes, the king, and asparagus ... The king gets up from his 
throne, slips on the asparagus that is still
lying on the floor, and lands head-first in his tortoise shield, severely bruising his nose and his pride. He yells 
for his servants to clear all the greenery
from his room, then to order that the ship should be sailed down river out of sight, and for the entire cargo to be 
dumped in the river."

1305-2: You say: "Now, this was his big mistake... the load of asparagus completely dammed the river, so he could no 
longer trade his limestone. Worse still,
the water still flowed downstream from the hills, came to the dam, and having nowhere else to go flooded all the 
wheat fields. So soon the town was running
out of food."

1305-2: You say: "Now if you are running short of food, those considered least worthy, are likely to be the first to 
suffer, and so it was here. No food
went to the jail's only prisoner, the captain of that asparagus ship. But, if you remember, he had dropped off a 
sack of asparagus at the home of the most
beautiful girl in the town, (the one nearly half as pretty as Marilee on a bad day,) and each night she sneaked 
round behind the jail and tossed a packet
of asparagus through his cell window."

1305-2: You say: "The citizens got angrier and angrier as they got hungrier and hungrier, and stormed the palace, 
grabbed the king, and threw him, too,
in the river. All were in despair, but then a wonderful thing happened, (nearly as wonderful as what happens to me 
when Marilee smiles.) Nature had worked
